Private, Residential
Location:Dubai
Our clients are a couple who wanted to redesign this two-storey Arabian Ranches villa to give it a sophisticated feel with a warm-wood Balinese design sensibility mixed with a European-living ideal. The clean-lined and calming luxury design needed considerable in-built custom-designed joinery, and hand-designed furniture, as well as new lighting and ultra-sleek bathrooms. They were also looking for a more cohesive flow between the house and the outdoor entertainment and pool area. And we were tasked with making the home suitable for their two loveable sausage dogs.
How we made it work
We started by taking this plan back to its bare bones in order to create a completely harmonious outcome throughout the villa. A warm engineered-wood theme emerges in the stairs and upper-floors, as well as many bespoke joinery features. Cool tiling spans the ground floor, and characterful lighting, furnishings and artworks punctuate the calm.
While this was a complete redesign, we needed to act swiftly to design and complete this project so that our clients didn’t have to rent elsewhere for more than 6 months.
We transformed one of the original four bedrooms into a walk-in dressing room, and another into a study for home-working combined with a den with its own media system.
Bathrooms have marble-look ceramic tiling sourced from Italy, immaculately laid so that the veining is entirely book-matched. Sinks are custom made and storage built for specific item needs.
Downstairs, the large format tiles continue to the outside pool space so there is a sense of connection between inside and out. The pale tiles continue into the pool itself to give it that Maldivian blue appeal. We also ensured that the pool design has a level zero-edge elegance. Lastly, we planned and put in the garden planting to finish off the design completely, and give it the total high-spec that was required.
The details
There are very few off-the-shelf features here. Notable exceptions include tiles imported from Italy and the elegant Gessi sanitary wear. Our speciality is the bespoke joinery, offering exactly the right spot and form for each shelf and cupboard, so that the owners can store and display items precisely to their preference.
Lighting is always key in Design’d Living interiors. The interior lighting within the hand-made joinery, particularly in the glassware cupboards, enhances the atmosphere in this apartment.
The artwork also lends luxury to this project, particularly the commissioned handmade ceramic piece in the main living space, which sweeps across the wall to reflect the ripple of the water below, and catches the light in different ways depending on the time of day.
The coffee tables, again designed by us, are made from Indian green marble and honed travertine, at different heights and with organic shaping to offer a softer look.
In the study, we designed the table with a glass leg, giving an illusion of floating in the space. Once we’d designed all the joinery, we worked closely with The Design House, here in Dubai, who custom-made the furniture to our plans.
